Our PR & Comms intern, Kasturi, shares what it’s really like to step into the world of housing comms for the first time: from learning the lingo to working on media campaigns, all in just a few short weeks.
I’ll openly admit that I started the internship as a complete novice. This has been my first experience of working in a PR agency and, as a beginner, I knew I’d learn a lot. I had never heard of crisis comms, never written a press release and was excited to see how much work goes into making sure a client gets the coverage they deserve.
Coming from the world of communications, social media and administration, I have experience working with different audiences, platforms and tones of voice. However, this internship has pulled together all my skills and knowledge and allowed me to put them into action.
A supportive team, even remotely
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about starting this role in a completely new sector. But I’ve been fortunate to join a team of impeccable professionals who made sure I felt at home straight away.
Despite being a fully remote team, everyone made me feel very welcome and included at every step along the way. The regular team meetings, especially the fun Friday quizzes, have given me a sense of connection I hadn’t experienced in any other professional setting. I’ve felt confident enough to reach out to any of the team if I have any questions or need clarification on anything I’m working on.
The job, so far!
From day one, I’ve been encouraged and supported to develop my knowledge on PR, comms and the housing sector. The chance to grow my skills while putting them into practice has been wonderful.
So far, I have attended industry webinars, issued press releases and secured coverage, written blogs, created social media posts, compiled data, brainstormed campaign ideas, attended client meetings, learnt four new platforms, worked on presentations and even bagged a PR opportunity with BBC Radio! I can hardly believe all this has happened in such a short span of time.
It’s also been interesting to join the industry at a point where AI is making its mark. To better understand how AI might shape the future of comms, I’ve been tuning into webinars and reading articles. Being part of this shift and seeing how quickly the industry is adapting has been an experience in itself.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I hope to continue developing my career in comms and PR. I am only halfway through my internship, but it has already laid the foundations for my future and given me the confidence to continue in this industry. I cannot thank See Media and IBP enough for giving me this opportunity and look forward to the next few weeks!
