At See Media, we know that accessibility isn’t just a box to tick – it’s a vital part of making sure everyone can engage with the messages we share, whether for our own channels or on behalf of our clients.
Working across social housing, education and related sectors, we want to help clients provide great places to live, learn and thrive. Knowing that accessible content reaches further, results in better engagement and is vital to ensure inclusion, we’ve created our own Guide to Accessible Content Creation – a practical toolkit bringing all our accessibility guidelines and expectations into one place.
Our team has long been focused on accessible communication – with accreditations from Communication Access UK and a strong awareness of inclusive practices – but our new guide helps us go further. It draws together the latest guidance and industry standards, paired with our own commitments and day-to-day practices.
The short guide includes tailored checklists and helpful tools to support our associates, whether they be writers, designers or content creators – to seamlessly embed accessibility into every piece of content from the start – avoiding any costly updates or resources to make content accessible later down the line.
Marking another step in our ongoing journey to improve how we communicate, we’ll keep this new guide updated in line with legislation and best practice and review it regularly to ensure it stays relevant and practical.
Take a look here – you could even adapt it for your own needs.
And if you’re thinking about creating your own accessibility guide, here are our top tips:
- Keep it simple – focus on clarity and ease of use so everyone can engage with your guide and it doesn’t add lots of time and cost to projects. Checklists, keeping copy short and separating the requirements for different formats or content creators is helpful.
- Share it with close contacts – get feedback from colleagues or trusted partners to sense check and improve it before you share it more widely. We did just that, and the feedback, while minimal, helped ensure we were doing the right things and that those we work with would be able to use the guide and implement the recommendations.
- Review it regularly – accessibility standards evolve, so your guide should too.
